Helping Your Pocket Pet Stay as Healthy as Possible

Pocket pets are adorable little creatures that bring you plenty of joy. Hedgehogs, mice, ferrets, and rabbits are just a few of the many pocket pets that are commonly adopted into the family. Of course, these pets have special health requirements, and it’s your responsibility to ensure your animal stays as healthy as possible for years to come. Our veterinarians can help you accommodate your pocket pet and provide the proper care and guidance. Before you adopt a small animal, consider a few important aspects that will impact your experience and your pet’s happiness:

  • Comfortable Housing Environment. Housing is an important part of ensuring your pet stays safe and comfortable. Every pocket pet requires something different, but in general, opt for cages that provide plenty of room to move and simulate a natural environment. Keep their homes away from predatory animals and loud noises. Make sure the bedding is nontoxic and absorbent.
  • Parental Guidance. Small animals are very delicate and aren’t the best option for small children. Many pocket pets may bite when provoked and require careful handling, so it’s recommended to keep these animals away from young children.
  • Balanced Diet. Every pet needs fresh water, so install a sipper bottle in their cage. While store bought dry food works great for many pocket pets, some may do better on food prepared at home. Certain pocket pets, such as hedgehogs, need a more robust dietary plan that includes live insects and fruit. Our veterinarians can help you understand your pet’s dietary needs.

Bring Your Pet for a Checkup

Since a pocket pet’s needs are always changing, it’s recommended to get a checkup at least once a year. A veterinarian provides the compassionate care your pet needs to feel its best. We have a range of services to prevent, diagnose and treat various health complications. At a checkup, we will take your pet’s vitals, do a physical examination and discuss your questions. A comprehensive appointment lets you get the information you need to keep your pet healthy throughout its day-to-day life. With our preventative approach, we can help you understand how to avoid the most common health problems that pocket pets develop.
