Caring For French Bulldogs

All dogs benefit from breed-specific care. Regular baths, nutritious food and plenty of playtime make for a happy, healthy pet. French bulldogs aren’t known for their shedding, but it’s helpful to regularly brush your pet to remove excess fur and keep their coat shiny.

Common Health Issues in French Bulldogs

Having a French bulldog is an exciting experience, as this breed makes for an irreplaceable companion. Unfortunately, these dogs are prone to certain health problems, more so than other dog breeds, due to their unique physical structure. Pet owners will need to be proactive in caring for their dog, and with the help of our veterinarians, it’s possible to prevent or mitigate these issues.

A few of the health conditions your Frenchie may develop include:

  • Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). Due to this breed’s shorter faces, they may develop breathing problems and therefore should be screened for BOAS before breeding.
  • Luxating Patellas. This is a condition affecting the knees, in which the kneecaps slip out of place.
  • Dental Issues. Dogs with shorter faces tend to have more dental health problems, such as crowded teeth
  • Visual Problems. Frenchies are more prone to cataracts and other eye problems.
  • Skin Fold Dermatitis. Frenchies are well known for their wrinkled appearance. These skin folds must be cleaned in regular bathing to prevent skin infections, known as skin fold dermatitis.

Even if your Frenchie does develop a health issue, know that our team will quickly help your pup feel better again. Blue Lake Animal Hospital exceeds our clients’ expectations through diligent service and superior care. Rely on us for the answers you are seeking.

At-Home Care

There are plenty of ways you can keep your Frenchie happy at home. These loving dogs do well when they are provided with enough exercise and training to reinforce positive behaviors. Some people say that Frenchies have a “diva side,” so dog owners will want to socialize their pet and teach it good behaviors through regular training. Additionally, grooming will make all the difference. Gently clean your Frenchie and make an effort to keep it cool during hot weather. Frenchies run the risk of heatstroke and often have difficulty breathing when it’s hot. Provide a cool, comfortable environment for your pet.
