C-Section Vet Kentwood

Routine veterinary examinations are key to keeping your pet healthy and that’s especially true during your pet’s reproductive years. If your pet is pregnant, it’s important to prepare for delivery with a knowledgeable c-section vet. Kentwood pet owners may not realize that certain dog breeds, including French bulldogs, cannot give birth naturally without a high risk of complications. A c-section ensures that your pet safely gives birth. And we deliver attentive care every step of the process. Learn more by contacting us for an appointment.

What Happens During a C-Section, and How Can I Help My Pet Prepare?

At Blue Lake Animal Hospital, we deliver unparalleled services for all kinds of animals. We offer specialized care for French bulldogs, which often have unique health needs. Learning that your Frenchie is going to give birth is exciting, but you are also likely concerned about your beloved pet’s well-being. French bulldog puppies have large cranial structures that can increase the risk of significant birthing complications, which is why the process almost always has to be done via c-section.

During a veterinary c-section, your pet will go under anesthesia for the surgery. We will make an incision to remove the puppies manually instead of by natural birth. Our surgeons have extensive experience in these types of procedures, so you can feel confident relying on our team.

After the c-section, your pet will need to rest. There are a few things you can do to prepare for the recovery period:

  • Set up a quiet, warm place in your home for the nursery, ideally away from children, visitors, and other dogs
  • Gather neonatal and whelping care supplies, including a thermometer, puppy formula, nursing bottle, disinfectant, and a journal to record weights, temperatures and other notes
  • Create a whelping area or another area that’s warmed using a safe heating source
